I found that buying the roasts on sale and grinding my own is cheaper here in OK as well!

AND I know what was actually used in the grind!

I grind chicken with turkey as well!

Every year we split a cow with another family and we have meat for the rest of the year. We also do this with a pig. Chicken is fairly cheap still but if the price starts to go up you better beleive I will be raising them right along with my kids!

Just wish I could put an oil rig in my backyard I would be in business!

Just got a package out of the freezer that I bought the first of February at Hy-Vee. $2.99 pound for 85% lean.

I bought ground round yesterday for 2.49 a pound at our local butcher. When it is at that price I buy 10 pounds and vacum pack it. DH and I shop once a month at place in Lancaster. It is a menonite grocery store. If you buy the entire roll of cheese they mark it down to 2.49 a pound. I just cut it into large chunks and freeze it. I think food is going to go up even higher.
I buy the manager special all the time. Actually, it is just aged beef. I wouldn't buy it if it was brown though. Just a few weeks ago the local grocery had chuck roasts for 2.49..and they were huge. I bought 5 and got 10 roasts out of them. Hubby calls me queen of the bargain shoppers.
Peace and Blessings,

We buy in bulk at the Meat Market. 85% for $2.69 a pound. It comes in 10 pound bags so we just freeze it up in 1 lb bags for future meals.

I realize how lucky I am, My parents raise beef and that has been our Christmas present. Have not bought any for years. Top quality also. Not sure what we will do when they stop.

I know what you mean. Dad always picked out the cow, sent it to the locker, we got the cuts we wanted etc. When I married and moved away I was new to buying beef and had to learn to cook lesser quality. Took some learning and a bit more chewing.

Ground beef is high everywhere I think. DH and I don't like "tube meat" (I read too much!) so we always go with fresh ground. We have a wonderful small town grocery store here, with really nice guys in the meat department. They will notify me by phone if there is a sale coming up, and we stock-up on 50 or 100 pounds of ground beef and freezer bags.

Lately however Tom (meat manager) informed me that ground beef is going up and will be probably staying up,...so I might consider buying roasts and having them ground up. So that's what we did last time we needed meat. Chuck roasts were $2.89#, and we had 100 pounds ground up (they don't mind doing it on a large order. So at least we have beef in the freezer for a little while...

Wish I could just get DH to eat less meat!!

[Corn has been going up as a food staple because it is being diverted into the fuel business. Write to your congressperson and ask them to stop the ethanol subsidies. We should be eating our corn, not driving it. Not to mention that it is terrible for your engine. So the price of feed corn due to ethanol plus the cost of oil is what is making food prices skyrocket. It is only going to get worse before it gets better.[/quote]

Exactly! I dont by ethanol... and I think they should reconsider alot of the farm subsidies....and before anyone says anything...we own farms.
