Price of hamburger

We buy 1/2 cow about twice a year from a local cattle guy and pay to have it processed in the cuts we want. I get ground beef with NO fat added. None. I add my own if I need it when cooking. I can fry up a pan of ground beef with a little olive oil and have no liquid at all to drain away. Buying the 1/2 cow comes to about $1.69 a lb. for all the meat cuts. The grower will call us when he has a cow he needs to put down due to a broke leg or other physical injury and would like to recoup his money invested in the animal.

The expense to plant corn has skyrocketed the past few years, we as small farmers could not even afford to plant it. We will plant corn this year for the first time in about 4 years and only to give the soil a break . (Soil likes and needs rotation)

Even cheaper than chicken is turkey and also very versitile. And I won't be surprised if high prices never come down.

I buy at a local Mennnonite store the Dutchman's in Cantril Iowa and it is always between $1.39 and $1.89 at the highest. They sell it in a 10# roll and I get 2 or 3 and cut them up into 3/4# per pkg for DH and I. We eat alot of chili and beefburgers and cheeseburgers and pasta bake.
