I do remember Betsy paper dolls. I also had a Betsy McCall doll. Small, maybe 8-10 inches. I made clothes for her.

I had forgotten about Betsy McCall! I used to love cutting them out and playing with them.

I remember Betsy and the books you could also buy to punch out the person and then cut the clothes out of the inside pages. Had to be very careful punching out the people as I would lose a hand now and then! My Mom did the permanent thing to us also. I HATED it! They were called "Tonnette(sp)" and my mom and aunts would do the Tony permanents on each other. Stinky!!!
|
yes, i remember them fondly from my mom's mccall's magazines
|
I've also been thinking of Betsy McCall Paperdolls lately! I was never allowed to cut them out of mom's magazine by myself, but had hours of fun with them. It was really fun to save them from one month to the next, sort of like Christmas with each edition. Things changed somewhat when my younger sister came along, as she preferred toy trucks over paperdolls and Barbies. Funny thing, today she is an excellent quilter and her name is also Nancy! Thanks for a good memory.

Yes, I do ! My grandma & aunts used to save them for us ... haven't thought of those in a long long time :)

Nancy...I too loved the Betsy McCall paper dolls.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane |
I hated those "Tonette" Aug.perms before school started and then again before Easter...I told Mom that she made me look like a fuzzy French poodle when I wanted to look like a sleek haired Irish Setter...and, even being a tomboy as I was, I still like the Betsy McCall paper dolls...brought back lots of memories...thank you

Well girls, you make me feel better knowing I wasn't the only one who looked like a french poodle with a flat top in those days lol. To top it off, I had glasses too hee, hee. I am enjoying everyones' responses and the stroll down memory lane with all of you. Thanks a bunch for the joy.

Yes, I remember those. Hadn't thought about them in years, thanks for triggering some fond memories with my grandma. :)
|
YES, my mom let me tear out the page and cut out the dolls before she even read it. I kept them all for years.

I loved those dolls! Wasn't there a McCall's magazine for girls? I seem to remember one...

Oh I sure do-- and have been thinking of them lately too since they brought out the paper doll fabric. Can't finsih my plans with the fabric because I need to know how to
back the clothes ( which is fabric) so that they will stick to the doll that is on the larger fabric. Know it's been done lately by some ladies so please any ideas are welcome . Bought all styles of clothes for the 7 and 1/2 " dolls even have 2 boy dolls and the pets. Came with no instructions. Need help as the "Tak it over and over" is only suggestion but I didn't know it was going to be this hard when I ordered the dolls and clothes.

I remember vividly ! My Nana subscribed to McCalls, my sister and I had to take turns each month getting the paperdolls. Fun memories ! We used to cut out the models in the Sears catalog and use them too.
|
I loved Betsy as a child. My sister was the big seamstress in our house and she set me up with it.
|
I used to play with the paper dolls also. Thanks for the good memories. Forgot about these paper dolls and I was always excited for the magazine to come.
|
I remember them well also. There was a fabric recently at Hancock's that had those dolls and some of their clothes. I couldn't figure out what to do with it so I didn't get any, but now I wish I had

AWwwww for the simple things..... |
This brings back so many memories. I use to sit for hours at my grandmothers playing with my paper dolls. And those perms and rag curls I remember but not with any fondness. It must have been a thing back in the day for moms and aunts to gang up on us with the Toni's and Lilt home perms. Life sure was fun back in the day.

I remember playing with the Betsy McCall ones. A few yrs. ago I subscribed to Mary Englebriet's magazine for a while, and she has a heavy (cardstock) sheet of paperdolls in each issue.
|
Loved those paperdolls. Speaking of perms, does anyone remember Spoolies? They were rubber curlers.
|
Thank you so very much for that address/site. I too remember
those paper dolls and loving them. My older sister would keep them for me to have when I visited her and her husband. Judy :-P |

I always enjoyed it. Sorry to hear it is no longer published. I'm glad I saved most of my issues. Actually, I plan to do a collage of the paperdoll pages eventually.
|
OMG!!! My mom would glue the paper doll to a heavier paper so that it would last longer, and my dad would cover the doll with a coat or two of varnish. My paper dolls always looked like they had a nice golden tan, but they lasted forever.
