I either offer them on Freecycle or take the batteries out and let my kiddos use them as toy phones, it just depends :)
Our Civitan Club collects them for cell phones for soldiers. If you have extra batteries you can take them to Home Depot for recycling.
i drop mine off at the senior center -- they do something with them so they can be used again.
I drop them off at the US Cellular dealer, our provider. They recycle them through shelters, etc. Probably any cell dealer does the same thing.

Didn't mention the charger at all. I know from experience that most chargers do not work on other brands, so how can they use my old, still good cell phone for soldiers? |
I leave them at the center where I have updated my new phone and they distribute them to a Womans Shelter or to the needy.

In our area you can donate the old phones. They are given to shelters for battered women to use. It keeps them out of the landfill too
Our local LIons Club collects them and they refurbish them to be given to Women'ss Shelter.
I give mine to our women's shelter. They can all be used for 911 calls even with no other service.

Thanks for all the ideas ... :)
