I don't think we have any wacky festivals, but this weekend we have three food festivals going on in Manchester, NH: greek food festival, latin food and fun festival, and Majahran (not sure if that's the spelling), middle eastern and Lebanese food. You could actually go through the whole weekend and not have to cook! How cool is that?

CarrieAnne 08-21-2010 06:37 AM

Edgerton Wi has Tabacco Fest.

Who knew? I lived in NH for a few years and never knew. I'd have come to Manchester for those!

Up north, just above where the Old Man in the Mountain used to be, Franconia has a rubber ducky race as part of its Fourth of July festival. It's a fundraiser for the fire department. People can buy raffle tickets. Each ducky has a ticket number marked on it. They put bags of the rubber duckies in the creek that runs down Main Street and the first one to make it to the bridge is the winner. (The current carries them along.) People crowd along the banks to watch the hundreds of rubber duckies - it's actually a lot of fun!

All of the festivals sound like so much fun. I'm heading out to the Zucchini Festival right now. It is cloudy and overcast. Sure hope the sun breaks through.

Too many festivals in Louisiana to name them all but here's a link.

http://www.cajunradio.org/louisianafestivals.html

Some of the ones I've actually been too.....

Buggy Festival (Church Point, LA)
Crawfish Festival(Breaux Bridge LA)
Festival Acadienne (Lafayette LA)
Festival International (Lafayette, LA) (this is a really big one)
Shrimp Festival (Delcambre LA)
Catfish Festival (Washington LA)
Jazz Festival (New Orleans - huge!!)
Black Pot Festival (Lafayette, LA)

**Mardi Gras **
Just about every town in Louisiana has some sort of Mardi Gras parade

newquilter10 08-21-2010 03:40 PM

Collinsville, IL has the Horseradish festival.

I've never seen so many gnats as we have here. It is almost reason enough to move somewhere else. You can't go outside in the summer without some kind of netting over your face -- I understand that Macon is the "gnat line". All across from here thru Thomasville definitely has gnats.

I am not sure I'd want to attend the festival in honor of them tho... :)

Let's see, here in Michigan we have the Cherry Festival in Traverse City, the Tulip Festival in Holland, the Peach Festival in Romeo, the Bologna Festival in Yale, and the Renaissance Fair in Holly. (I just got back from the Renaissance Fair -- that's the place to go if you want to see a bunch of folks who come dressed in costumes that have nothing to do with the Renaissance. I saw Teddy Roosevelt plus several elves and fairies and more body parts hanging out than I ever want to again. But the shows are entertaining.)

Dee 08-21-2010 07:07 PM

All summer their is a fair or festival. Contests and Polish days. Classic car shows and today was the tomatoe throwing contest.

Alondra 08-21-2010 11:36 PM

Well, besides a gazillion Kolache Festivals (yep, Texas is full of Czech towns, as well as German and Mexican), we have the infamous Mosquito Festival in Lake Jackson and Clute. Then there are Crawfish festivals and Rattlesnake Steak Fries (I'll pass, thank you), and there's the Riverwalk Christmas Festival in San Antonio. New Braunfels has its Wurstfest. Terlingua has its International Chili Cook-off, and if you hit it just right, you may see Waylon, Willie, and the boys. Houston has an Art Car Parade that is something to see, and a Nutcracker Market before Christmas every year, as well as Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Italian Festivals. Fredericksburg has an Easter Fires Celebration (German tradition), Katy has a Rice Festival, and Gonzales has a "Come and Take It" Festival (referring to their flag's daring the Mexican army under Santa Ana to come and take it on their fateful march to San Jacinto). There are so many, it's impossible to list them all... quilt festivals, sugar cane festivals, bluegrass and all sorts of music and art festivals, Magnolia's Renaissance Festival, stomping-of-the-grapes festivals... something almost every weekend. Is it any wonder I don't get much quilting done on the weekends?

Alondra 08-21-2010 11:40 PM

Speaking of a Gnat Festival... remember years ago they had a net sort of thing you put over your head and zipped up to protect your fancy hairdo when you were dressing? You could use one of those to protect your head at the Gnat Festival. <G> Oh, well... it was a suggestion. <G>

Alondra 08-21-2010 11:49 PM

Hey, Scissor Girl... Colorado has some pretty piquant town names, too, such as La Jara. I can't tell you what it means on here, but if you know anyone who speaks Arabic, they can tell you. <G> It's the same word used in Guadalajara (as in Mexico or Spain). The first part of the word means "river" and the last part is something that doesn't smell too good. La Jara produces some really good onions, though. You have to wonder who named those towns, and why.

[quote=Scissor Queen]The craziest festivals I've ever heard of are both in Colorado. There's the frozen dead guy festival and there's the headless chicken festival.[/quot

lmbo! must be the lack of oxygen!

eiltcoq 08-22-2010 04:17 AM

quilt3311, I'd love to see the 'chicken quilts', if you will be going to the festival and taking pictures of the quilt. I have one that I'll be working on this Fall.
I love to hear what is happening in other parts of the Country.
I always though it would be nice to take 3 months off and travel the Country. Work gets in the way, though. Thanks for sharing. Eiltcoq.

cyniree 08-22-2010 06:13 AM

we have a Spinach festival in our area.

Panther Creek Quilting 08-22-2010 07:13 AM

Well I want in on the craziest festival contest!

Eldon, Missouri (about 20 miles from here) has the Annual Testicle Festival! Yes, you read that right. They have fried mountain oysters, turkey fries and hog fries. They also have music and fine spirits and it always gets tons of attendees.

cyniree 08-22-2010 07:15 AM

I have heard of this, I even took a photo of the billboard, cause I thought it was so funny. then I was told about it, yuck.

cyniree 08-22-2010 07:18 AM

Panther Creek quilting, I am down by Eldon a lot. Do you have some favorite shops? I found a place that has quilts, not sure what else, its off C road, from 52, by Versailles. Do you know of it, too. Are there any others close by, Jeff, or any where else. I know about stovers shop.
Thanks

Our little town (Colfax, LA) of about 6,000 swells to 70,000+ the first full weekend of November for the Louisiana Pecan Festival. I think there is a festival somewhere in Louisiana all year long. Bunkie has the Corn Festival, in other surrounding towns the Couchon de Lait Festival (roasted pig--translates literally "milk-fed" or "suckling" pig), boudain festival, and about every other food grown in LA festival.

Across the border in Hamburg, AR, is the Armadillo Festival. I've never figured out why they celebrate this animal that is notorious for digging holes in lawns, and scratching up and eating flower bulbs.

butterflywing 08-22-2010 11:41 AM

when we had a summer house in cape may, they had a lima bean festival.
ever see earrings with hanging lima beans? in metuchen we have oktoberfest, but everyone has that, don't they?

almost forgot: in saugerties, upstate new york, they have a garlic festival. you can follow your nose to that one.

Favorite Fabrics 08-22-2010 05:36 PM

In our area we have a lilac festival, Canal Fest (celebrates the Erie Canal), Eden Corn Festival, a tomato festival, and a chicken wing festival.

Matilda 08-22-2010 05:51 PM

A little tiny town called Hamburg, Michigan has kohlrabi festival. They have a "small" patch outside of town!

zz-pd 08-22-2010 09:33 PM

We have a garlic festival, the same thing, but they even have garlic ice cream. I have never tried the ice cream, and probleley never will. God bless.
