I remember counting step to school. I would lay in bed and count the dog breathing. Then one day, same as onebyone, I said, why am I counting. I'm getting the school and it's just as far even if the steps aren't always the same. At least the dog is breathing. Eventually I stopped. Glad I stopped before I moved and had to walk almost a mile to school.lol

I'm a counter also....rungs on a ladder, points on a star, window panes, petals on a flower. Are we obsessive or extremely organized??

No, I don't. I am concentrating on where I am going next when quilting.

I think counting is a stress reliever. If you are counting you can't think about what ever problem in your life is causing you stress. Your mind is free of it's worries, like counting sheep to fall asleep. I never stress if I loose track just start over.

I worked as a cashier at Walmart. I got over counting after work. The customers often looked at me because I didn't just hand over the money stated on the register. I actually counted the money backwards. I would check the drawer for new money and would crumple each new bill individually so they wouldn't stick together. I still do.

I've counted things on occasion. Stripes on a wall, bricks on the fireplace, cars going by, cat stripes, buttons on a dress, etc. :)

No, I have never done this, but I think it must be a form of daydreaming, just more concentrated on counting. I used to daydream about winning the lottery, would think about this all the time while cooking and cleaning. I never even bought a lottery ticket, that's what is so funny ! I have stopped all this daydreaming and concentrate more on the present and I am going to be 70 in October. I daydreamed all the time as a kid and young adult.

If I need to do a certain number of stitches, then turn and repeat, yes I do count.
Now I do count the basement stairs going up or down. Fell once on my back when being careless so I'm more careful now. of course I just broke my wrist in the back yard! If counting keeps your work going well, good for you and your Great Gran!

I don't do this but I did use this trick when I was a kid and got into the habit of blinking constantly. I rode the school bus and decided that I "couldn't" blink until I'd passed so many telephone poles. It worked and the habit was broken!

it sounds OCD to me. I've got so many other thingd to think of while walking, likeing trying not to fall over!!! or when sewing, trtying not to sew my finger !!! My mind is always racing a few steps ahead of my fingers or legs, so no, I don't count. I like wannabe, when bored think of winning the lottery and the things i'd do with the money.
