Ranchwife, my office is just a block from convention center. There are lots of good eateries in walking distance - daylight, only. I walk to lunch a lot when the weather is nice. PM me if you want any eating ideas in walking distance. You will have a great time!

Go with a group too. I am from St Lous but I would not walk the Arch grounds at night. Not sure that I would walk around Lacledes Landing at night unless the area clubs and eateries are super busy. You shoud see cops patrolling .
I love my home city but like every major city, just be aware. Ignore the panhandlers. Dont even acknowedge them and walk confidently past them. They will not bother you. I used to party on the Landing back in the day...waaaay back ! Great, historical area! Love it. Sandy |
Why wouldn't you want to see the Arch? It is beautiful!! Stand under a leg and look up. Go up in it. You can see for miles! Gorgeous at night too but I would not roam the grounds at night. Great museum under the Arch too.
The Busch family farm, Grants Farm is the correct name, is located just outside the city. About 30 minutes to get to. Tour the anheuser-Busch Brewery ....it is closer. Take a short cab trip to get there. Dont try to walk to it. Too far from you. Sandy |
When we went to visit there we also went to Anheiser Busch to see the horses and the wagons. Also Big Foot is there - the big truck. I had a 12 year old son with me and that was what he wanted to see as well as the Science Museum and the arc. My aunt and uncle lived there at the time.

Is the Jewel Box still there? I grew up there and my Grandmother used to take me to the jewel box on school holidays to see the beautiful flowers. It is a treat if they still have it.

I agree with all of the above. I would also add that if you have time and access to transportation. The Zoo is fabulous, the Science Center is a must see, The Botanical Garden and the orchids there are free and impressive too; but most of all you have to eat on The Hill. It is the Italian neighborhood. I have eaten at many of the restaurants and they are all really good. Gioia's Hot Salami is a must have. If you are a coffee drinker, Shaw's coffee is on The Hill and they roast their own beans on site.
My in laws are there, so we spend a fair amount of time there. It is very much a bigger city... panhandlers and dirty in some sections, but you find that anywhere. I have been to all of the areas recommended... including LeCledes Landing, and I have felt them to be pretty safe; but like everywhere anymore, you need to be aware of your environment. Haven't been back to St. Louis in years, but enjoyed it back when. All of the above posts make me want to go back again. The Arch, Grants Farm, Jewel Box, Botanical Gardens, boat rides on the river, great food, plenty to see and do. Google their web site, ask at your hotel. I did plenty of Science Teachers Conventions (retired now) and always had info sent before to help plan off time. Hope you learn much and remember more.

Forgot to ask about the wellknow dairy that was famous for their ice cream in St. Louis. Was it Pevely?

The Hill is great. Jakes Steak was good and Blueberry Hill was fun.Please Please go to Sweetie Pies and tell me how it is. I would love to go there.

I agree with everything said above. The museum below the arch is very informative about the beginnings of the development of the west. Right by the Arch is the "old" Cathedral. There are two cathedrals in St. Louis, the old and the new. The old Cathedral is the first church west of the Mississippi. It's a beautiful church. If you have the opportunity, go to The Hill. There is a restaurant downtown named Kemolls. It's an upscale Italian restaurant that has been in the city for years. Excellent food!!
