What a handsome man! I have a deaf boxer that I rescued and we took a class to learn sign language....it was amazing, by the end of the week, she was like a totally different dog! She understood me and I in turn, understood her! I modified the ASL a little so that I could sign one handed - especially when Button was on a leash. Her sense of smell is intensified so treats were a blessing. Your dog will keep you in sight all of the time, so be careful you don't step on him!!! LOL As far as a name - I agree, wait a few days and his name will come to you! (although I really like Keller) Thank you from my 2 rescues and myself for taking him in - you will have the most unconditional love for a lonnnngggg time!

How about Stanley, Stan for short.

What a cutie! I like the name Max, too, but I also think you're going to settle into the right name after a couple of days.
I had a dog who was deaf for the last several years of his life and a few things helped us. - He doesn't know he's deaf, so don't treat him like you feel sorry for him. He won't understand what you want if you do. - We have a fenced back yard with a light on the house and another one on the shed at the back of the yard. To get Baxter's attention if he was facing toward the back we'd flash the light on the shed; if it was dark and he was facing the house we flashed the light on the house. He soon learned this was his signal to come inside, even if he couldn't see us in the dark. - Deaf dogs can't hear you coming but they will respond to vibrations in the floor. They'll know you're coming by your footsteps, and stomping your foot is a great attention-getter. However, watch out if there are small children about; their steps are not heavy enough for the dog to feel them through the floor so it's easy for kids to startle a dog who is facing away from them. If a snap is going to happen, this is a likely time. Teach small children how to make themselves known to the dog without scaring him. - All dogs "hear" your body language better than any sound you could make. Keep in mind that for the most part dogs don't relate to each other through sound either - some of mine never bark, whine, or make any noise at all! Use your body and your energy the same with a hearing or deaf dog and they'll "hear" you just fine. :) Thank you for rescuing this little heartbreaker! |
How about Dillinger?
|
You know the pet pyschic says that you can communicate with your dog through a pyschic connection? I can tell you at times I would think something and my dog would do, so perhaps?
|
Puggsly was the first thing that came to mind when I saw him. Adorable! Good luck with this cutie!

He is wicked precious the more I look at him and his black and white suit I think butler, how about Higgins, or Belvedeare? If I spelled that right.
|
He is beautiful. So pleased you have given him a loving home. Already great names here which I can't top.
|
How about Matlin? Or Ferdinand? Ferdi can have a double meaning; the big, sweet bull in the children's story, and for Ferdinand Berthier. He's the first deaf person to recieve the French Legion of Honor, and he's the founder of the world's first deaf organization.
I SO overthink-I know! |
He looks like a "Rascal"
|
One of the most famous composers of all time was Beethoven. He did his best work after he became deaf.
There was a movie made about a dog named Beethoven. Loved it! Your puppy looks like a Beethoven. You could call him Bay or Bait or Beethoven. And, if you are a classical music lover, it'll fit in just perfect. Edie |
"Buddy", because he will surely become your best buddy, and you will be his.

how about "Husher".... or a synonym of silence is sullen, you could call him "Sully" |
How about Rochester - perhaps "Chester" for short - they have a good School for the Deaf there.
' Gallaudet"is maybe a bit too elegant a name for a working dog. . |

MICKEY-

Rufus --- he just looks like get out of my way ?

He is so cute...and bless you for saving him. At first glance his little face reminded me of Radar (from the show M*A*S*H*)...maybe your Radar was on when you came upon him (LOL)  Looks like there will be ons of love for him...good luck

Looks like Butch to me.

How about Tucker, and when you call him, use the signlanguage sign of a T when calling him. Or something that starts with a K because a signlanguage K would be easier to distingush. Like Kolton, Kelly, Kindle. Decide what letter in sign lanuage would be most recognizable then look up baby names. It won'y be as hard as you think.

I have a dog who is deaf. You are going to have to learn to "talk" with your hands.
I stomp on the floor to get his attention, then with hand signals he will come and go outside, things like that. Really isn't difficult to live with a deaf dog. Puppy training and them running off is a problem. Good luck, and he sure is a cutie! |
How about Bruiser?
|
We had bull terriers, and I named my black and white one, Tux - Andifar Formal Apparel.
Deaf dogs can be taught Sign Language. Lots of Boxers, Bull Terriers and Dalmations are unilaterally or bilaterially deaf (one ear or both). It is genetically linked to the white gene and due to missing pigment in the inner ear. Kansas St Vet School is where I took all of my puppies to be hearing tested prior to placement. Please be sure to microchip your dog and never, ever let him off of a leash out in the world. Good luck and enjoy this little guy. He will get great joy learning to communicate with you and you with him. |
What about HOOVER he will pick up anything as time goes by. -- J

I like
buster. It really doesn't matter which name you choose he won't hear it. What ever fancy's you. I also like Buddy because he is really going to be your Buddy. He will be very dependant on you I should think. |
He is really sweet. I don't understand why they put animals down for this reason. I know he will be alot of work. I hope things work out for you both.
|
I think it is great that you took him in, or that he got ahold of your heart. He will be a great friend, and you will manage well with him.
How about Lincoln for a name, you could call him Link for short. He is a cute little man. |
Popeye.... I don't know why, it just came to me when I saw the photo.
|
I have a niece that is deaf, so when my little poodle went deaf I started using sign language for no, come and other one word commands. I was surprised that he responded so well to the sign language. there are sites on the internet (google ASL - american sign language, for help). enjoy your new puppy whatever you name him.
|
He looks like a Thor. I had a deaf American Eskimo and she was a wonderful dog. I got her attention by using light switches, turning off and on. We had a pair and the male took great care of her. Then he passed and unless you knew she was deaf, you would never have known. Bless you for taking on a challenge. Love does wonders for animals, too.

I think I would go with Keller that someone suggested. So happy your taking on this cute guy. Best of luck.
