I'd say it's because these punchlines leave the listener/viewer to their imagination to fill in the blanks/formulate the mental pictures! Unlike today where everyone's everything is hanging out all over and there is nothing left to the imagination.

But that's just my opinion.

re-examine #6, #7, #8 #10, #20 and #21. today's JOKES are certainly no more lewd. in fact, that's where you're reading this one.
