You can use close pins or tacky glue(that's my favorite to use). My mom was using elmers glue. Both of them are easy to sew through. I haven't tried any other glues yet.

Thanks so much for letting me know how to wrap the cord ahead of time (with glue and clothes pins!) This will be a great project whle watching TV. Then I can do a lot of the sewing all at once.
