At first I thought that bird was some sort of a Kingfisher. Then I saw where you are from. I have heard them laugh .... probably at the zoo if I remember right. Kingfishers sound like machine gun fire as they fly looking for fish but maybe I should start calling that a laugh too. Thanks for the great photo and information. And oh yes, I will be singing that song for the rest of the day also.

Never saw nor heard of that bird. What an interesting little guy. Birds here in Maine are beginning the migration journey and my feeders are filled with them stuffing their little beaks.

He is a good visitor. J J

Very nice! He's definitely an interesting neighbor.

We learned that song in grade school. "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree-e. Merry, merry king of the bush is he-e. Laugh kookaburra, laugh kookaburra, gay your life must be."

I am amazed to hear how many of you know that song and were taught it at school. I thought it was just an Aussie "ditty".

I was surprised also. Definitely thought it was just a local song that we grew up with here. |
I didn't learn it in school, we sang it in Girl Scouts as a round. I bet we drove our leaders crazy between that and Row, Row, Row your boat.

My daughter and new husband took a vacation to Australia a while back. She sent me a message after one very sleepless night and told me about these birds. Evidently they're very vocal and she was used to the deafening quiet of living out in the country. Now I know what bird she was talking about!

Thank you for showing us the bird. Nature things are the greatest!
