It's a scam. We've gotten that email several times from several different "friends." It's a hoax. Don't know how they get our email addresses and know who our friends are.

jitkaau 06-03-2011 03:30 AM

Who paid for the email? Whose computer are they using? They don't sound very poor to me - possibly living on the donations of people they are duping into helping them.

I don't know you except from this board, and I don't know her. Do you know her? This sounds like a scam to me as well, and somehow, someone got your email addy and is just trying to make money. I would send the email or give the sender's addy to who ever your email carrier is, like hotmail, yahoo, or whoever and get them to check it out. i had to do that several years ago. BUT whatever you do, DON'T answer it.

jahaper 06-03-2011 03:44 AM

Sounds like a scam to me.

ptquilts 06-03-2011 03:44 AM

This happened to a friend of mine, her email was hacked. One of the recipients of the email was an elderly cousin, she had a hard time convincing this lady that it was not real, she hadn't been mugged, her husband was fine, etc. A few days later the cousin calls back, Are you sure you are both alright??

smagruder 06-03-2011 04:10 AM

SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Krystyna 06-03-2011 04:12 AM

I've gotten these from time to time. They are phoney and the result of someone hacking into an email account. The first time I got one, it was supposed to be from a friend of mine who is a famous theologian and adviser to the Pope. The grammar and syntax was so awful, I just knew it had to be fake. It was.

CarrieAnne 06-03-2011 04:20 AM

scam!

Please go to search and find H. Carpanini and let her know about this. She may have been hacked into and doesn't know it. That way she can check it out on her end.
Meanwhile DON'T do anything except delete that email!

Minding My Ps and Qs 06-03-2011 05:48 AM

It is a SCAM - don't send a penny. Ignore the e-mail completely, but don't blame the person whose name is on the e-mail - someone stole info from her too!

clynns 06-03-2011 06:20 AM

Be so careful what info you give out. I fell for an email scam about 7 years ago. I ended up having to cancel my checking account, ATM cards, all credit cards. Do you know how hard it is to get money out of your account with ID that has a hold on it? My money was direct diposited from work and no way to get to it. I could use bill pay to pay my bills, but no money for groceries, gas, etc. It took 3 weeks to get new ATM card, 2 weeks to get new checks, (no one likes to accept starter checks), all my credit cards took 3-4 weeks. I also put my name on the list at the 3 major credit bureaus. They had to personally call me if someone tried to open an account in my name. I must say that Sears is the most through.

Beware of scammers. Call and talk to the people wanting information personally. Never click on links to something. YOU type in the address bar the web address that you need to go to. It takes so long to repair the damage done in such a short while.

Arleners 06-03-2011 06:37 AM

In the past 6 months, I have had one friend mugged in London, and another stranded in Barcelona. Both were safe and sound at home.

grannypat7925 06-03-2011 06:47 AM

This is a popular scam going on. Also done by telephone claiming to be a relative in a dire situation and needing money. Never fall for these attempts to relieve you of your money!

suzette1954 06-03-2011 06:47 AM

scam

Lynneander 06-03-2011 06:50 AM

It is a SCAM. The sender will use a somewhat familiar name in order to get your attention. Delete the e-mail asap.

noahscats7 06-03-2011 07:11 AM

The owner of a local quilt shop got a similar email but hers was from a different person and she knew this person was actually on vacation. The hotel bill was $2400.00. Not a place I'd want to stay...LOL.

Snorky Lvs2Quilt 06-03-2011 07:21 AM

it is definitely a SCAM!!! I have gotten them before too. Mine supposedly came from my financial advisor. Now there is someone who would have access to money if in trouble. I am only one of her many, many clients. Why would I be singled out to help her with money problems while she was on vacation. One call to her office verified it was a hoax.

Sew and Sew 2 06-03-2011 07:22 AM

I not only got a strange email for the same purpose. I also got phone calls from a company that was using a cell phone to solicit money for a supposedly "investment" company. Looked up the number, from my caller ID, using the whitepages.com reverse look up feature. I reported them to the fraud unit of the FBI. Was told these vultures have already been reported and they will be prosecuted when caught. Been moving from state to state with their scam.

svenskaflicka1 06-03-2011 07:39 AM

big time scam. like has been said, here, it can carry a trojan horse virus, and it is also used to get money from unsuspecting folks. it has been used with family names included, as well--always check with your family members to see if they did send the e-mail before you respond. if you can't reach them, don't assume that they are in trouble--check with other family members, or the local police.

in fact, with the advent of things like the "heritage" and "family tree" sites, it has become a lot easier to find out details of unsuspecting people, and scams are becoming much more intricate. be careful. be suspicious!

one of the things i teach my students (in anesthesia) also applies to every day life: "cultivate your paranoia. it will be your best friend. if something makes you suspicious or uncomfortable, it does so for a reason. follow it up. check it out. take it through. never ignore it."

oma66 06-03-2011 07:40 AM

I have gotten this email many times - once while my friend, who was supposedly stranded in England, was sitting at my machine! It is a scam. my friend said someone had hacked into her computer and got her email addresses and she had to change her email address...

traumaRN 06-03-2011 07:41 AM

Yes, several of my husband's friends got that email a couple years ago. He only knew about it when people started calling him to see if he was alright. His email account was hacked and he had to close it and open a new one. Do not respond!

JusticeClan 06-03-2011 07:50 AM

We read in our local newspaper just recently about scams that are going around right now and this was one of them. So, BEWARE !!

MOBRIDGE MOM 06-03-2011 07:55 AM

patski 06-03-2011 08:28 AM

Its a scam, its' even been on the news here

Alondra 06-03-2011 08:49 AM

It's a scam. You'd think by now they'd have dreamed up a new scenario - I know at least six people who "got stranded" in Scotland (none of them had ever even been to Scotland). Please don't be fooled!

Great-great granny 06-03-2011 09:02 AM

THIS IS A SCAM - DO NOT REPLY

quiltpd 06-03-2011 09:06 AM

I got one very similar with a friend's name on it. It is a scam. And, my friend's computer was "hacked". she had a real mess. Fortunately, my computer is OK !!

kellen46 06-03-2011 09:11 AM

It is called phishing and it is a scam, send it to spam and then empty the spam box. It could carry a dangerous virus or it could be cousin to the nigerian price scam to get you to send money.

LindaaJR 06-03-2011 09:19 AM

It is a scam. Do not give this person any money. Report it. Take care.
Linda

grandjan 06-03-2011 12:44 PM

No but this definitely sounds like a scam. Even if the name is one you know well, assume that it's a scam until you double check with the supposed sender.

RobertaMarie 06-03-2011 12:50 PM

You might want to report this to your server.... Scams and fraud are running rampant. Be sure to delete it and do not reply....

Landers 06-03-2011 12:54 PM

Hey I got that one and then one from Alma,& one from Henry.. Pay no attention to them! They are SPAM!

Nolee 06-03-2011 01:04 PM

Happened to me that way on Facebook. Teenage friends of my daughters got mail that I was in England and has lost my money, could they Western Union some to me and I'd pay them when I got back. Now these kids know I'd go to my family and parents before I'd ever write them, so they called me to let me know. Canceled Facebook and will never go on another social network again.

Block the address by putting it in your spam or junk mail.
Report the sender if possible.
That is what I did.
