My taxes went from ~$5100 in 2002 when I bought the house to about $6100 this year. The bank and I own my Cape Cod style house of about 1100 sq ft, sitting on 1/4 acre. We have no property tax in NH so its the major source of income for the State. The big debate here is whether to buy in Tax'achusetts where they have real estate, sales, & income tax, or buy in NH where there's only the real estate tax. For me, it was a no brainer.

We have just under a half an acre here in NY with a 3 bedroom ranch home and our taxes are about $7200 a year (just one more reason I want OUT of NY!!) We also have sales tax and income tax and sleep tax and any other tax you can think of. One of the biggest irritations to me is I live in upstate NY and part of what I am taxed on goes to support NYC and their water distribution! And now they have increased the fee for me to register my vehicle so I can help support the MTA (metro-transit authority) for all of the people who commute by train. Like $35 round trip per day is not enough for them when the people are standing for a 2 hour train ride!! GRRRR!

When I quilt the corporate world I sold our 1M dollar home and bought and restored the house that I am in now. You do not even want to know what kind of taxes I was paying for that one!! Plus I was tired of living in a zero lot line house and having my neighbors literally on top of me.
After buying this house and adding on to the home, plus building a 3 car garage in the backyard so I can work in, I still have under what the house was appraised for when I bought it so I am not complaining too much. But we have had so much in fill in this area, the county is going to reappraise the homes in this zip code and a few others. There are only a few homes like mine left standing here and the rest are 6000 to 8000 sqft homes. And to be honest with you our houses are starting to look like little nooks compared to the neighbors, but I love my little nook!!! The last house that sold down my street sold for almost 2M! I do not even want to think what my taxes are going to jump to when they come in this spring and rethink everything. That is the other reason I am moving out to the country!! But like I said I will make stupid money on this house when I sell it just because everyone is wanting to move in this area and with the huge corner lot (a full acre), they can build a monster here and still have a lot of yard to cut. We have 3 acres with hardwood, large running creek, 3000 sq.ft home and our property taxes are under $1200 a year. We are outside the city but in the city limits. I use to be $600 a year but then the huge McMansions started being built all around us.

I pay $60.00 a year for garbage collection and $30.00 for fire protection fee. We have our own sewer and water system...
and 2 acres of land. But then again, this is Canada... I was reading another thread about the monstrous prices of medical in the U.S... Don't know what that is either! |
Acreage....we live on 1/2 acre...and we built our own house three years ago...its 1700 sq ft with 3 car garage...nothing fancy...the first year it was $5058, second $5400 and this year they want $6100...saying our house is worth 245,000 when the only house comparable to ours in this hood has been listed for 18 months now at 249,000 with no bites...so Im really hoping to get it back down. My inlaws a couple towns over have a full acre 2100 sq foot and only pay 3300 a year...same county...makes me sick...hopefully this works leaving here in 10!!
