Once your project is done, wipe the back side with white glue (not the washable stuff). The glue secures the thread/yarn and enables the project to be washed. I have needle punched on clothing, purses, slippers, mittens, etc. and all have withstood washing.

yes you can just iron a light weight fusible to the back and you are good to go. I fixed a rabbit and put it on the back of my robe and it has been through a lot of washings over the years and still looks good. the needle punch has held up really well.
