I would like to make my grandson one of the U shaped travel pillows. I found some free patterns online but I'm not quite sure what type of fabric to use - cotton, flannel, fleece, something else?? I'd really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on this project. If it turns out ok, hopefully others in my family might want one, too. Thank you!

cotton and flannel sound OK to me. I wouldn't use fleece for myself as it would make me too hot with that on my neck. JMHO

Thank you for your thoughts. I agree about the fleece and I wondered the same about the flannel but also thought how much softer and more comfy the flannel might be. Now I'm wishing I had actually checked out those I saw in the airport!

I did some in cotton and lined them.

I use one year-round at home because of neck problems. Whatever you make it out of, please consider making a pillowcase to fit it so that the pillowcase can be washed. My favorite neck "u-pillow" is made of flannel and filled with some type of beans or rice, so it is microwave-able (and is sooo comfortable when heated!). I still haven't made a pillowcase for it, and I wish I had done so many years ago, as it is wearing thin.

I've made several of the "dog bone" pillows, using prequilted fabric. It holds its shape well and launders nicely. When making any kind of pillow, I begin with making just as I would when making the quilt sandwich. It takes a lot less stuffing and seems to hold up well with use. It has a smoother surface, too. I agree with the idea of a pillowcase unless you feel comfortable washing the pillow itself with some regularity.

Make sure the seams are reinforced. There is a lot of stress on the seam that goes around the neck.

My pillow is covered in fine terrycloth and it does not migrate.

Never made one, but if I see them on sale, I but it. These make good gifts for someone in hospital or recouperating.
