Questions About Belize
#7
My husband and I sepnt 2 weeks there a year ago. We were on Caye Caulker visiting friends for 5 days and touring around the mainland for 9 days on our own. We went with a view to seeing if we'd like to retire there in 5 years. We knew within a few days we did not. We have been studying Belize for.the past 25 years or so. We feel like it has totally been romanticized in people's minds. Yes, there are some beautiful areas and we even ventured off into the jungle to see exactly how locals live. Even though there are some beautiful places, it IS A 3rd WORLD COUNTRY. We felt the need to always watch our back. We are experienced world travelers so it was not paranoia setting in. Any of the somewhat nicer homes had fences with Constantina wire on top. That is not for us. The absolute nicest area is settled and owned by Mennonites. It is very clean and "Americanized" for lack of a better word. However, anyone not in the clan cannot buy property in that area of Spanish Lookout. The other area we felt was the 2nd nicest was around Corazol. It has many expats living there. We may go again for a vacation and visit friends, but retiring there is not in our future. I hope this helps. It is strictly our observation, and not intended to sway anyone else. :-)
