Oh my, I have three cats but do have a door on my sewing room. Well it's a bi-fold door but it keeps them out. I hook it closed when not in it. For your situation I would try to sew when they naturally nap. YOu can put them "under" a play pen on a blanket and go sew for a couple of hours. They will get used to doing this and not mind. then when they wake, play with them a lot. Good luck and have fun.
