Remember when?

I don't remember adding color to margarine. I remember we always called it Oleo, not margarine. I remember that we always used butter, sparingly. My aunt had a neighbor that would borrow a stick of butter before every pay day then would pay it back with a stick of Oleo. It made my aunt so mad. She finally bought some Oleo and when the neighbor came over to borrow a stick of butter she gave her a stick of Oleo. Funny, the neighbor never borrowed from my aunt again.

Trolleystation, I remember ration stamps. I remember going to the hall for coffee, and telling the ladies that I liked to drink coffee. They looked down their noses at me, and told another lady that my grandmother told me to say that to get more coffee, which you wouldn't have gotten anymore than what you entitled to with your stamps. The grandparents owned an ice cream store so sugar or bananas weren't rationed for them. Grandpa would give this one family some of the bananas free because their daughter was allergic to milk. I wasn't born in the 1930's.

I don't think we ever had margarine. My grandmother used a churn until after I was married so we always had fresh butter. The butter wasn't yellow at all, more pale creamy colored. I've always bought sweet cream butter. I use a butter bell to keep the butter spreadable. I do use Parkay margarine in some recipes. I do not like the tubs of spreads sold now at all.

Cokes for five cents, yes!!! We used to walk a couple of miles to drink a cherry coke (or lime coke) at the drugstore's food counter. Also remember the candy cigarettes. And cap guns. And a 3 Musketeers bar "big enough to share with a friend" for a nickel.
