And the Magic eraser. I have dishes that get marks from knives and when they've been in the dishwasher and from pots and pans. It's just the erosion of the metal. I have had same thing withpots and pans making scuff marks on a counter top.

Mine's not from a dishwasher as I don't have one (except for hubby). I do use Barkeeper's Friend, but never tried it on my dishes, but I plan on trying it. Works great on scratches and stains on my sink. Thanks for tips.

How odd, I'd never even heard of such a thing. I wonder if it has to do with minerals in the water?
I have 3 sets of dishes, and use them all, all the time. Orange lusterware that came in soap boxes in the 1950's, Corningware I've had since the last 6 or 7 years, and Royal Dalton bone china which I've had for about 30 years. No marks at all on the Corell, I see scratch marks on the Royal Dalton and lusterware, but have to hold them at an angle to the light to see them. No dark marks at all.
We have minerals in the water here, but the water is naturally very soft.

I think the question has been answered but I will add this:
At our community center, we have white Corelle dishes and the coffee cups will sometimes stain. A tiny splash of chlorine bleach in the cup removes it immediately. This shocked my friend because they have the same dishes at her church and when the cups stain, they were throwing them away !!!!

Your post is old and you may not see this but I'll post it anyway. If you have the Pfaltzgraph cleaner put it on let it sit until it dries then wash off. It leaches out the marks. I discovered this by mistake when I was interrupted. Barkeeps Friend and elbow grease will also work.
