Default reverse applique

I'm not sure if that is the right way to describe what I am looking for. I want to surround an embroidered square with a larger piece of fabric ( making a pillow ). I know there is a way to do this by sewing one piece on top of the other, cutting the "background " fabric and exposing the square but for the life of me, I can't remember how it's done. This is probably clear as mud but if you have any ideas about what I am talking about, I would appreciate any help.

It sounds to me like you want to inset piece your embroidered square into one large piece of fabric, instead of surrounding that embroidered square with border strips. I suggest googling inset piecing and see if you can find instructions. I know I've seen it done, but I haven't done it myself. I think Ruth McDowell (I think that's her last name) describes how to do this in her pieced applique books. She does amazing machine piecing that looks impossible. You'd swear it's applique.

If you can find the book Fat Quarter Fonts, it explains the technique. It's very simple to do. My granddaughter used coloring book pages as her applique.

Should I post this question on the main section?

this sounds like a big log cabin. the emb is the center square or shape, then built up around the edges like a log cabin.

There are quite a few videos on you tube but this one is a fun one, I looked at how to reverse applique by machine to find it, hope it is what you are looking for. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIlF5j8pKds
