I've always gotten the hard mat with pokies on the back, designed for carpet. After a year or two they always start cracking but 2 years divided by 50 bucks about a buck a month. I'd give up my iron before I'd give up my wheels.

There are thicker chair mats available from office supply companies. The underside of the mat has molded points that secure the mat into the carpet to keep it from sliding. It will possibly mat the carpet down under the mat since your carpet I so thick, but the difference in height might help keep your mat from moving.

I needed a mat to span the length of my longarm as I can't stand for long. My carpet is very dense also. The lowest price I found was $300 without shipping, so my other half ended up buying I think it was birch plywood that is very hard and sanded it. I can roll around on that baby like no tomorrow! I thought it would buckle, but its so strong it's amazing! I bought a tall barstool on casters so I can glide back and forth- so far so good!

I don't use a mat in my sewing room with my roller chair and it works just fine on the carpet. I don't have a really high pile carpet, but I don't know how much difference that would make.

I think the problem is the mat you have is too flexible. The mat I have by my sewing machine isn't particularly flexible compared to what you have. It stays put.

For safety's sake, I would take the mat you have out of the sewing room. After all, if you wreck the rug with the chair, you can always get a new rug. If you trip and seriously hurt yourself because of the mat, well, it's impossible to get a new you!
