I am fortunate to live by both ... the beautiful Organ Mountains and the incredible walks at White Sands.

Both sound good for different reasons - I love the beach, but you'd probably have more privacy in the mountains! :)

We live close to an ocean but I prefer the walk in the mountains because of the smell. Mountain air is so wonderful, especially if there is a river nearby.

Either one would be perfect if the right person is with you. ;)

My DH#2 courted me with casual hiking in the hills. He felt that on a hike there was a lot of time to get to know each other and chat without pressure. Later there were mossy soft places to really "know each other".

I live in the mountains so would have to choose the beach! I really want to see the ocean again before I pass on - haven't been in years!

I love both places. But for a picnic, I would definitely prefer the mountains. Much easier to find a place to sit, shade when you need it, and no sand getting in the food.
