Go on line to the maker of the mat. they will have instructions. I soaked an old mat for several days and it really helped. I had to weigh it down in a shower stall, and kept it under water. then used a scrubber. Nylon works well...tooth brush, etc. Each company will give you instructions. I found a brand new mat at a Thrift store that was gray, without mentioning the name, and it is really hard on blades. I don't use it anymore. The materials that were used for making the mat were not as good as others.

I went to harbor freight's websiste, ordered 3 packages of the carpet cutter rotary blades, and with shipping, I got 3 packs of 2 or under 8 dollars. That's better than Joann's half off. I priced thier 60 mm replacement blades this weekend, 5 blades $50.00. With the price of gasoline, the 2.99 shipping was cheaper than driving to one of their stores. I just copied and pasted your name and number , googled it. ordered it and was done.

Since I started buying them they have been $1.99, have them on sale for $1.49. but as long as this first blade I have put in has lasted those blades will last me a lifetime. I bought plenty when I would go in because they offer a free flashlight that every quilter must have. Its like a mini ott light and I use it all the time. They are both well worth the trip.

Went by my HF last week, was out of them...he checked the computer, said the warehouse was out of them too....he would put in a order, guess I need to check back to see if they have come in....he said he couldn't keep them in stock anymore...mentioned that women were getting them for quilting....he laughed and said he noticed women were buying them, but thought that the husband was sending them to the store...LOL

Our HF had then on sale for $1.49 plus I had a 20% off coupon plus a free gift. I just didn't need anymore right now. If the blade doesn't cut as good as you think it should, put a drop of sewing machine oil on it and take a Q tip to move it around the edge. This helps some of the time. On cleaning the mats, I use a white board erasier after each cutting and never had any problems. Once a year, I take dish soap and a damp rag and wipe it clean as I don't want to lose my lines.
