I have 4D family portrait. I haven't used it all that much but according to youtube you can convert a photo into an embroidery file

There was a scanner that turns scans into stitches for .pes embroidery--P E Scanner by Brother. I have one--don't use it because I have software in my computer, AND it only does 4x4 or split 5x7 designs--but it does a very professional job. It is amazing--you draw your picture, run the scanner over it, and it converts to embroidery stitches. It is still hard for me to comprehend how this happens. But I would put it up against manually digitized designs any day! Such fun to make your own drawings turn into embroidery!

I have Bernina Sewing Machines and Bernina Version 6 Software will digitize a scanned picture beautifully.
