Year round schools do tend to start earlier. That may be some of those early dates.
I am not at year round school, teachers start the 18th of Aug and kid on the 20th. My own children go to a different district and the kids there go back on the 18th of Aug. Which means I don't need to find anywhere for them to be at the beginning of the year.

In Bethlehem, NC, I go back on Aug. 19 and the kids come back Aug. 25. We use to attend school 180 days, but the state has added 5 more days. This year the 5 extra days will be required teacher days, 2012-2013 they will be student days.

My niece's kids will be starting Aug 4th or something like that. That school district is going to year-round schooling, so they'll be having 2 weeks off every so often.
Some of Chicago's schools (the early start schools - year round schooling) will also be starting at the beginning of August and the rest of Chicago's schools (traditional school year)will be starting after Labor Day.
My nephew starts Aug 17th and the schools in Barrington (where I work) start Aug 23. Every district in Illinois has a different start and end time - it all depends on where you live.

Here in Lee County, Fl the kids go back Aug. 8. When I was a kid in NJ, we didn't go back until after Labor Day. They keep talking about having school all year round so the kids don't forget over summer, but they were saying that when I was young too and it never materialized.

My kids are grown, but my daughter has two starting in August around the 22nd. Her youngest is 6 and going into first grade, and they cut back one hour on his school day because of funds, they live in Indiana. The kids in Illinois start at differant times, depending on where you live. In the burbs we start around the middle of August.
