No year round school here either and school starts first week August, this year it is the 4th, and usually ends last week in May.

Arkansas it is usually on the 19th of August, unless the 19th is on a weekend.

We have a lot of year around schools here and some started around the end of June and it seems every week another one is starting. They are a tracking system. The traditional schools open in about 4 weeks and the end around the middle of June.

My dgs in Queen Creek AZ starts to school on Monday.. His mom (my dd) is a teacher & her school starts 8/3.. just for teachers, students start the following Monday. Way back in the dark ages, when I went to school, we never started school until after Labor Day and we were out the friday before Memorial day. My dgd says that is because we didn't have as much history to lears and they do now. Did she mean I am getting old????

Just down the road in another county, teachers start on Aug. 17 and kids on the 22nd. Hard to believe we'll have 2 weeks in before Labor Day! But hoping to be finished by the end of May if winter is kind this year.

The excessive heat and humidity is terrible here in South Louisiana sometimes as late as October. I can remember being a student (40's and 50's) trying to combat knats and perspiration. I have terrible memories of trying desperately not to swallow knats while playing my clarinet in band class. YUK. Another reason for the early start is that there are more holidays. Our parish has holidays such as Labor Day, Sugar Cane Festival Friday (teachers have inservice day and children have a holiday. Many students bring animals to the fair.), Thanksgiving week (teachers have state meetings), Christmas Holiday (of course it's not called that), Martin Luther Kind Day, Mardi Gras, Spring Break (Easter). Also twice a month, teachers have inservice on Thursday afternoon, thus giving early dismissal to the students. This year they begin around Aug 9 and end the last week of May. The local colleges start their summer sessions early in June, so students who participate in summer programs must be done with reg. school to be able to attend. As a teacher, I loved beginning early. I always went two weeks early on my own time to get my classroom set up and ready to go. I still get a little bit of the blues at this time of the year. It was my favorite time...just raring to go. The older I got, the more I appreciated those holidays. I needed to re-charge "my batteries."
I have an idea! Come up north and help me set up my classroom! I'm planning on going in the first couple weeks in August to get my classroom ready.

My kids start back to school July 25th This is so depressing for me. It seems like children don't get a chance to be small anymore or get to spend enough time with their families without being under constant pressure from school work. I know my kids have to come home from school and spend sometimes 3 hours or more doing homework. I better get off my soapbox before this turns into a really long reply.
