I like the back to school sales and like to look at the new items but usually don't have a need for anything but school glue and glue sticks. When my kids were in school the supplies were furnished, same with my grands now. I see a lot of school lists in the store for each grade for many schools and they are long lists!

When I went to school, my parents were responsible for providing my school supplies and I was responsible for keeping some of those supplies from year to year; I was never a teacher's responsibility.

I vaguely remember that we were " issued" a box of eight crayons when we were in grades one, two, and three. White paste was doled out from a big jar of it. I think were also "issued" those horrible, dulL, round tipped scissors.
We did not have kindergarden.

I'm a retired primary (well most of the time) teacher and know how much of the household budget went toward my students. Most shopping trips included supplies for my kids... especially writing and art supplies. I always found it more important and harmonious for the kids to have what they needed rather than having to wait for parents to come forward with it on their own.

That's how it was when I went to school, but not today. Unfortunately, some kids do not take care of their supplies in the least. Currently, I substitute and bring pencils for the kids that don't have. I cannot tell you how many pencils I pick up off the floor.
