Selling for Others on eBay - what to charge?

Is there anyone on here who has ever sold things on eBay on behalf of someone else? And if so, how did you charge them?
I've been asked to help a family that needs to sell a bunch of furniture and other home stuff on eBay. They're too busy to do this themselves and would compensate me to do it for them.
Any suggestions on compensation. Some percentage of sales (and if so, what percentage)? or a flat fee or ???
Experience? Recommendations? Warnings?
Thanks!

I've never done it, but I know someone who does and he charges 50% of the transaction. Out of this 50% he pays the fees. He also deals with all the shipping and correspondence. But, this is for people that aren't family...

I used to sell items for a lady that had stock from a retail gift store. I received 35% of the sales price plus shipping and listing fees. She was not a friend though. This was a professional relationship.
I would say 10 to 15% plus all fees would be fair.

I used to do that for people where I used to live. They weren't friends but, I charged all the Ebay listing costs, sellers percentage and the cost for packaging, i.e boxes, tape, bubble wrap etc., plus I charged 5-10%. If it was a large ticket item (over $100) I charged them 5% and 10% if it was a smaller ticket item (100$ and under). It really is quite a lot of work so I would have probably charged the same if it was a friend or relative as well. They should understand that. If they don't I wouldn't do it for them. That's my opinion. I hope it helps give you an idea of what to do. What ever you decide you really need to get the details worked out before you start or it could cause some hurt feelings in the end. Good Luck.

I did sell for some larger estates for a long time, and my fee for selling, no matter where I sold it, was always 30%. Even at that I didn't make much money! All the expenses of selling came out of that 30%, such as Ebay fees, gas for my car, renting tables at shows, hiring helpers, everything... and remember please! that you will still have to pay Ebay's listing fees whether the item sells or not. VIP to keep that in mind, especially in our economy now. Hope this helps...

Many folks do this - that said, it is against eBay rules unless it is an authorized eBay Dealer, they have given permission to.
This might matter, if things were to go very wrong with the sale.
I would think however, 40% commission would be reasonable.
