Has anyone ever used serger thread for the bobbin in doing machine embroidery? Any comments would be appreciated.

If it's cotton serger thread, I wouldn't do it because of the lint. If it's polyester serger thread, it might be worth a try.

Joivey - If,it were me I would run screaming from serger thread for any use other than in a serger. I use prewound bobbins for machine embroidery unless the back needs to look like the front - as in free standing lace ornaments, etc. We should use the best we can afford in fabrics and threads. Inexpensive thread will come back to bite you. I'm not a thread snob but to me it's worth using the best I can for my projects - whatever they may be.

The vast majority of serger thread is pretty uneven. You need very smooth thread for an embroidery machine. I recommend a quality thread specifically for bobbins, 50 or 60 weight. I personally use pre-wounds almost exclusively. They aren't too expensive and hold a lot more thread than a manually wound bobbin.

Serger thread is not the same "ply" as sewing thread. It is more linty. I think you may have problems with bobbin tension. I would not use it.

Would you use salt instead of sugar in a recipe? The right stuff for the job is always the best way to go....jmho

I'm pretty new to embroidery, but I was told by the lqs to only use 60 wt. poly. I obey!

I do, especially when doing fsl. A few years ago I wanted to make the kids FSL Easter baskets but didn't want the cost of rayon thread. I used variegated serger thread. It worked great. I used a sharp 90 needle and slowed it down and sometimes you have to double stabilizer

An employee/teacher at the local sewing machine store used serger thread in bobbin and top thread for lace bookmarks. she was using the professional 10 needle machine. I use Glyder thread, no't know the weight but it is very thin and works well for embroidery. Machine embroidery is secondary to quilting for me but I do embroidery once in awhile when I have time.
