My kitchen island is 8'x4' and it has a stove in it. It is perfect because I can cook in the center where the stove is and there are two large areas for prep or appliances so I can do more than one thing at a time and have helpers in the form of grands who are not in the way. My sink is behind me as I cook and there is enough space for someone to wash dishes or put dishes in the dishwasher without being in the way. Love my kitchen. We remodeled so that if we ever needed to use a wheelchair there would be enough space to move around in without getting in each others way.
