I try to get the ones with the sole plates solid at resale shops. For steam, a cheap B&D at KMART or Walmart.

I never leave an iron plugged in unless I'm using it. An iron draws current even when not in use. You can usually feel the bottom of the iron and it will be slightly warm even when not turned on. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I, too, never leave an iron plugged in when I am not in the room. I do not buy expensive irons, but do use the steam and use water directly from the tap. I have two, one smaller one for my granddaughter to use. They usually last for quite a few years. We will see how long they last when I retire and will be using it more! Can't wait!!!

I use 1/2 distilled water and 1/2 tap water in my irons -- never have a problem with them spitting. My iron is plugged into a power strip along with a fan -- that way I always remember to turn the strip off!

Glad you had an extra and that you were paying attention! Too bad about the smell. I have a rowenta and dont like how it indents near the pointy middle area and that's where I seem to want to start to iron fabrics. So I picked up a cheapy at a Goodwill $3 and have been super happy with it!

I also buy cheaper ones--$20 Sunbeams usually. All the instructions now say NOT to use distilled water--can't remember the reasons but something about ionization problems. Also, they discourage using vinegar anymore because of rubber seals in the iron that deteriorate with the acid of the vinegar.

I have a GE dry iron that is about 50 years old and going strong. [I] also hate to see it go. They just don't make them as well anymore. They just want us to keep buying.

I agree with buying cheap. I've had 3 Rowenta's and they don't last any time at all. Very frustrating to spend SO much money on something only to have it not work. Then I got I think a White with the water tank; it too croaked and didn't last long either. I'm with cheap.

I always have a extra iron in my room. I have had mine quit on me before & couldn't iron until I got to the store. So now I have an inexpensive Dollar Store one in reserve. They work good but I like a heavier iron for my ironing & pressing.

Indeed you were lucky you were in the room when it happened, that's scary for sure. I had the motor burn up on my old Kenmore sewing machine, and gave me pause when I saw smoke coming out of my sewing machine.
