Boy, wouldn't you love to put a rooster in there so you could set the eggs? And might get something that would turn out to be a new breed or a good addition to whatever breed you have. Probably a red hen, or don't folks raise my childhood favorites any more, Plymouth Rocks, Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, etc. Lots of nice memories of these lovelies.

If your hens are older, or may be get a fright,or something upsets them, they can lay very large eggs, mishapen eggs, rough shells, or very thin shells, a hens natural laying period is usually 4 years, then they gradually decline with production and quality. always put grit in the feed or have them outside so they can scratch and pick in the soil.

I have chickens and we occasionally get these. I call them "burps". I don't think it is their last egg but when they first start laying they do sometimes put out these minis. Some eggs just come out little like this. Some come out big. I have about a dozen layers right now but some of my girls are very old (6+ years). They still pop an egg out on occasion. I have white and brown layers and have done a side by side taste test. There is no difference other than the color of the shell. What I can taste the difference of is between a store bought egg and one of mine.
