i've been using a spray bottle on the end of my ironing board for 45 years! i hate being burned by a sputtering iron...
and it sure makes the irons last alot longer-
gotta love those middle of the night (light bulbs) :)

I didn't use a steam iron for years after mine urped up some rusty water on a muslin block of a quilt top I was about to quilt for someone (not my top). Fortunately I was able to replace just the block but I was gun-shy (iron-shy?) for years. Now I have a newer iron and have started using steam again.

I had this same problem. Luckily I was able to wash out the 'rust' spots. Do I still keep water in my iron? Yes. Do I need to change? Yes. Will I? That's a good question.
I feel as though I don't want more items hanging around my ironing board. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks!

Well, several months ago (maybe a year) it starting leaking water out of the steam holes. It would leave marks on whatever I was ironing. I didn't want to buy a new iron then and I don't now. I have looked around at them and found one I might like to get at WalMart. Still, I don't want to spend the money. I finally figured out my solution last night around midnight after it once again leaked water on the very pale yellow fabric I was ironing. The thought occured to me that if I quit putting water in it, it couldn't leak water out of it. DUH!!! So now I am using it as a dry iron and doing just fine with it. Why did it take so long to figure that out? :cry:

Thanks everyone for your comments. I really enjoyed them. I have always used a sprayer even with my steam iron. I hate wrinkles and want to get rid of them as fast as I can so the extra moisture from the sprayer really helps. I also don't dry my fabrics completely before ironing. Right now I am not going to buy a new iron, but probably soon. Thanks again, your comments made me smile. :)
