If you search for 'abbreviations' you'll find several posts like that. It would be nice to have a master list somewhere that's easy to find, maybe pinned to the top of links and resources?

QuiltE did a summary of them - and it's on the board "somewhere" - but I have a hard time finding it.

I also think it would be helpful to have it as a "sticky" at the top of the QB Help section. Or maybe at the top of every section?

I could see it as being "feasible" in "links and resources" also - but I hardly ever go to that section.

It took me years to think to look there for anything. And I still don't visit that section very often.

I had to ask my teenage GD what SMH means. It's smacking or shaking my head. She rolled her eyes and laughed at me.

wovens or fusibles
white or fuschia
watermelons or figs.....
"work on floor"
"what on....Fudge!"
"wait on food"
"washed off floor"
"walked on fabric"

Oh, the possibilities!

I'll admit, I had forgotten the term "initialism." It was good to revisit it and to find out how it differs from an acronym. (I'm a word nerd.) The short answer is this: an initialism gets each letter pronounced (WOF, FBI, SOS) but an acronym gets pronounced as a word (NASA, LEO --law enforcement officer, PETA).

The other day someone PM'ed me (personal messaged me-- LOL--laugh out loud--) and mentioned they collect TOTs. My first thought was "tater tots?" Second thought was "or kids?" I knew I had seen the initialism, and that it's pronounced "t-o-t" but it took me a couple hours to remember it stands for Tone on Tone. She especially likes WOWs. Again, first thought was "don't we all like wows?" Then I remembered it means White on White (fabric, not crime, in context).

Yep, our lingo can be confusing, not only to first timers on the board, but to old timers like me as well.

I work in IT...my whole world is acronyms and initialisms, to the point where we make jokes about how many TLA's we deal with every day. (TLA - 'three letter acronym' - yes, we have an initialism to talk about our acronyms...)

It IS fun to make obviously wrong guesses about them, though. I do that to the network guys sometimes on slow days, when they send out an email that just looks like alphabet soup.
