Having taught English many years, writing the full word the first time it is used with its common "shorthand" in parentheses after the first use is the correct way of doing this!

Agree totally with M. Elizabeth if it is, let's say , a report you are writing or work related and something you deal with daily. In re to this board and others similar it seems that probably would not work....there are always new people either joining or lurking , have no idea what the initialisms mean and lose interest in persuing their particular topic of interest. It just seems to me that the posts are so short, sometimes just a sentence or two that it doesn't seem asking too much to just write it out.

Just for fun, I looked up WOF with google and found a whole list of meanings, including 'width of fabric' -http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/WOF

One of the meanings - 'waste of flesh' - made me think that perhaps WOF could also mean 'waste of fabric' in our world. As in "that method of making HST's is a terrible WOF" (ROFL).

Now does everyone know what ROFL means? (I had to look it up the first time I saw it.)
Ohhh.. Dunster those google meanings had me rolling on the key board. I had not heard Who's on First, for a long time

A while back, someone wrote a condolence note to a friend after the death of a loved one. He ended the note with LOL. Sounds strange to us, doesn't he. But when asked about it, he said it meant Lots of Love!

For a long time, I did not know what "BOGO" meant. (Buy one, get one)

I have a lot of problems with the knitting instructions when they don't have an area w/ definitions of abbreviations used in that pattern.
