Closing the account is a great way to go. As for the bank information they may have stolen the checke for, that may be true. However sometimes crooks these days have also learned how to wash check, where they remove the original amout, put in what they think they may be able to get and then attempt to cash it. Keep a real close eye on your other accounts from this point on to, especially if they are attatched to that account.

This happened to us, and we went out and bought a locking mail box. You also need to let the police know about this so they are aware that someone is breaking into mail boxes and stealing mail which is a federal offense. You might also have a check on your account for someone taking money out of your account. Close the account and start a new one, maybe even change banks. Jan

If it was a check you wrote to pay a bill, the ink can be washed away leaving your signature and then the check can be filled out to withdraw all you have in the bank. Never put check enclosed mail in your box to wait for the mailman. Hand it to the mail carrier yourself or drop it in a secure box.

You may also want to put a credit watch on your three credit reporting accounts - Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. Depending on what information was printed on the check (name, address, phone number and/or drivers' license number), they can take that and the checking account number and sometimes open credit accounts. You also have the option in some states to freeze your credit for a fee, meaning you have to unfreeze it by paying a fee before you or anyone posing as you can open another credit account. That will stop would-be thieves in their tracks.

Contact the police and open a theft case. Just in case the perp makes checks with your info and starts using them (they will go back account closed but may have your info on them and merchants may come after you). You will have recourse and proof that you closed the account on a certain date due to theft.

I use to be a payee for someone who had a check stolden, bank cashed the check and had to pay back as the signature did not match . However it is as you say concern for someone collecting info re: your account. Good luck which ever way you go. :)
