I have to keep the sugar hid from my DH. He is totally a sugar buff. If available, he will make syrup out of his coffee. I, on the other hand, do very little sugar. It is just nasty tasting to me. If I eat a piece of pie, I have to eat it with my meal or I can't gag it down. One or two bites of something sweet is all I can do unless I have something with it to counteract the sweet taste. They are messing with so much of our foods now that anything is possible with the sugar.

I think our tastes buds change at times, just like our sewing tastes change. But still, next time you go to your Doctor, mention that to him. Companies are always changing their products for one reason or another, so it may not be you.
I can't stand too sweet nor too salty anymore myself.

I found this interesting article about beet sugar vs cane sugar:
    http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/S...me-2939081.php

It may well be that the sugar we are buying at the supermarket has changed over the years from cane to beet, and it may also be that some people can discern the difference.

Edit: The original poster might want to try making sure that the sugar is made from sugar cane. Looks like C&H is a reliable brand.

I have bought Crystal Beet sugar for years and years. I found absolutely no difference in the cooking, baking, canning, preserving. Can't taste the difference, can't see the difference. I started buying it when we were first married 53 years ago when we couldn't afford the C&H and just stuck with it. Edie

Thank you so much prism99 for the info. That may very well explain it. We live in a small town with one grocery and, subsequently, no competition. They stock the cheapest products and charge the highest prices. I've never seen C&W sugar on their shelves.

    Thumbs down

    *** FYI
*** I am a diabetic also, and my classes say you should NOT us
    Splenda, Sweet'n'Low, Equal
because over time they will make you crave more & you will use
more and more and that is not a good idea.

*** Also, the So-Called Naturals (Truvia, etc.) are not really natural
if you are not using the leaves
(if they have been tampered with as in made into crystals) they are
no longer Natural. Besides I did try the Truvia
and it has a terrible after-taste.

*** I dropped most all of my sugar, but when I want sweet I use a
    small amount of real sugar.

I'm sure glad its not just me. I am using more sugar in my iced tea. Hot tea I use about the same. Isn't as sweet as it used to be.

I wonder if it is because of all the artificial sweeteners and for me using Agave. It seems like my taste buds are used to the extra sweet, so normal doesn't seem sweet. I'm working on getting off "sugar" too. Boy do I feel better. The constant craving does diminish but it is taking a while.

I like the sweetners, been using them for years. I also love glazed donuts, don't eat them very often anymore. Don't sweeten coffee or tea. Not big on chocolate either.
Salt on the other hand I crave. As in pretzels and low salt potato chips. I do have hypertension and on meds. I always try to get low salt.

Maybe sugar is like drugs. The body keeps craving more. I've read that some meds. can change the way you taste things. Is it possible you started some new meds about that time? I too find that Truvia has an aftertaste and that artificial sweeteners in general give me gas. Now I'm trying to space out my usage.
