Last evening when we went up to bed, we put a ladder-back chair with the back out on the sofa and two pillows from the back of the sofa. When John go up (long before me), the dog had gotten up on the sofa and slipped between the pillows and the chair was sleeping behind the chair. Later when John returned from church (we go separately), he said the dog was not happy by my confining him to the kitchen.

I should add:
If you try this make sure you wash your hands really really well because even the slightest smell of the Vicks is enough to make him avoid you and dislike you because of the way you smell.

Why is he getting up on the sofa?

Our last dog loved to look out the living room window. The only way she could see was from the sofa. We move the sofa and put an old chair near the window, she was happy to have her own place to watch the world go by.

Oscar is much the same. He likes to be able to see outside. If the sofa is away from the window, he does not get up on it. He lays on the floor in front of the family room sofa, but if he could see out a window from it, I am sure he would climb up.

Just yesterday, after a big snow, I was reminded of another way I make my dogs avoid something with Vics.

When it snows, my dogs pee on our deck, probably because it looks the same as the yard, and it's closer and they don't have to walk through a foot of snow to get where they want to be.

I take about 3 of extra metal feeding bowls, put Vics on the bottom, and lay them upside down around the deck. I think the smell is strong enough to make them want to get away from that area of the deck, and worth walking through the yard

In the front yard, where the dogs can't get to, there was a stray cat that used to like relaxing on the futon on the porch. A few pieces of paper towel with Vics has gotten rid of the cat hair on my cushions.
A way to get rid of the kitty, but not hurting it.

You also might try crating him. He might like being in his own space. Just make sure you have his own blanky in there and when you come home really praise him and play or take him for a walk.
