I neglected to tell you that my LAQ drives 2 hours to bring her quilted quilts to our small town in Siren, WI. She is very reasonably priced and, therefore, I feel a tip is in order. Thanks for helping. Yolanda

My long armer is so inexpensive that I do buy her a gift to give her when I pick up my quilt.
I only send out bed quilts as small quilts I do myself. Dont make many large quilts.
For heirloom quilts I would use an expert quilter I know who does amazing quilting. So far my quilts are not heirlooms.

If your long arm quilter owns her own business, then I would not tip her. If she works for someone else - like a LQS - then I might tip her or buy her a nice gift or give her a gift card for her birthday or Christmas.

I am a LAQer and I do not expect a tip. If I expected more then I should charge more. Some of my customers do add a little to their bill and I accept it gracefully. I always make sure each quilter, tipper or not, knows I really truly appreciate that they continually bring their quilt tops to me to finish--that is thanks enough. Seeing what everyone is making is like having my own little quilt show all the time, what could be better.

i think the general consensus will be that you are not obligated to tip your quilter.
however, your own heart seems to have concluded that you want to tip her and would like some suggestions as to what might be appropriate.
the standard tip for other services is between 15% and 20%.
if that's more than your budget can support, perhaps you could buy her a spool of her favorite LA quilting thread, some bobbins for the machine she uses, or something similarly useful to her business.

I always add more $$ to the bill for my LAQ. She does not charge enough for her quilting. She says she feels funny taking it but I tell her I tip ,my hairdresser. My hairdresser owns the shop and she takes really good care of me, puts up with last minute appt changes etc. it is worth it to have someone take care of you.
