I'm just curious Pam, do you work your drafts, is that why you have them shod? I personally would say, that if anyone didn't have shoes on, they don't go around the horses, I don't care how "tough" they are. Nice looking horses.

Just curious, do you take them anywhere around Arthur or Arcola? If so, do you take a side trip to Miller's Dry Goods or Stitch 'N Sew to pick up fabric?
The reason I ask is because they have a large Amish community there and the people shoeing your horses look like they're Amish. Also, young Amish seldom wear shoes in the summer, and some of the women don't either---even to the grocery store and in the barn yet they seem to be a pretty healthy and hardy people. Arthur would be about 2 hours from Southern Illinois.

Raptureready, I worked the Raggedy Ann Festival for 2 years and the Broomcorn (Arcola) once with the horse and carriage, just set up and did rides.

These folks are Amish, I have my shoeing done in Montgomery, Indiana.

When I was a kid we never wore shoes either, in fact I am barefoot right now, but I am NOT walking in manure. My feet are far too tender to go outside without shoes these days.

I have a carriage business, and they work on the paved roads that is why they need shoes. The ones I do not work, only get their feet trimmed.

lol! Growing up my grandparents raised cows. We went barefoot all summer when at their house (much to the dismay of my parents!) One of the best times we had was running thru that cow pasture! Now I would saw ewww but then it was particularly fun to squish!

Okay. I didn't know there was a settlement in Montgomery. We went barefoot on the farm too. As kids our feet were so tough we could run on rocks but those days are long gone. I was running late to take DD to school the other day and left barefooted. By the time I got across the gravel I'd have saved time by putting on shoes. LOL

thanks for the pics! so cool! I, too, am a barefoot kind of girl. flip flops as soon as the weather allows. I never wear shoes at home. Hubby says bottoms of my feet are 20 grit sandpaper. I do walk on the gravel drive without problem. :)
