TORNADO HITS SANFORD, NC. ON 4-16-11

I live about 15 miles from the affected area and have family right near where the tornado hit...gratefully, all of my family is safe! Thank you to all for your prayers, I know they are being heard and my prayers continue for those directly affected by this storm and others here and abroad!!

That was quite the horrible weather. My son lives in Fayeteville and he called us to tell us they were ok but devastation 1/2 mile away from him and all around. WI was hit a week ago about 60 miles south of us. Sure has been a lot of devestation and this season is just starting. Hope it is done. Glad to hear members on the board are ok.

Went into town yesterday, and I was shocked at all the big trees either down or snapped in half. Many houses with tarps on the roof. The elementary school where my littles will go was closed, perhaps because of cleanup? The road was closed w/police directing traffic. The devastation started closer to me than I thought...about 4 miles away instead of 8. :shock:

Thank you all for your response to my posting. It is not nice to hear that others were scared to death this weekend. But it is heartening to hear that all is well with our members and their loved ones.
I listened to the weather on WRAL and they said it was an E3 tornado with winds up to 165 MPH. They said the storm started just south of Lee Co in Moore County and was from 1-3 miles wide at one point and was the same tornado that hit Bertie County 63 miles NE of Sanford. This tornado stayed on the ground longer and that is why so much damage. Mike Maze said usually or tornados pop up and down and only stay on the ground 20 seconds or so and this one was on the ground minutes.
He said these are the type of tornados that they get in the plains out in Kansas.
Gee no wonder it was so bad. There definately were miracles here in Sanford. Paul Cagle form Cagle Furniture was at his shop, he is in his 80's and he survived a store that was brick and was flattened. Miracle!
