Traveling by air to Hawaii
I'm sure some of you have taken quilting materials in your carry on bag. It will be a long flight and I want to do some quilting on some QAYG blocks. Can I take my little Olfa "nice Knife" - it's a little push button blade that pops out half an inch to cut threads, and will my needles be OK? Also is there a shop on Oahu, Kauai or Maui that I absolutely have to see? Any other suggestions will be welcomed.

One shop not to miss is The Kapaia Stitchery in Lihue, Kauai. They do not have a website. But have some gorgeous fabrics!! They have 2 batiks that are "theirs"-meaning you get it only from this shop, along with a pretty multi color floral print. The ladies are very sweet, and a joy to deal with! Phone: (808)245-2281
I found this shop when I went to Hawaii last Oct.

Needle and small sissors are OK to fly with( I fly with a pair that have one inch blades) ... as for actually doing some quilting... some of the seat space makes it very hard. My most receint flight .. one the guy in front of my reclined his seat there was not enough room to use my lap top.

LOL, I had the same issue with a man last time I flew, too...I couldn't even read a book without the seat being in the way...so when they offered me a hot drink I nicely rested it by his head since I couldn't use my tray...laughed with the host about the passenger better hope there wasn't any turbulence. Funny that the seat wasn't reclined anymore after that!

You could use that since the blade is only 1/2". I usually have my little emergency pocket sewing kit in my purse with the tiny scissors. usually has the needle threader in it also. If you have an old name badge that had the magnetic attachment (I have one) I put that in the case no needles fall out.

I would check with the regulations for whatever airline you are using. I rarely take any sewing with me when I fly, especially those long flights. I find the cabin to be so very crowded and worry that I would drop something which then poses the problem of how to pick it up. I'd rather read or watch the in-flight movies.
