If you have ever had a vaginal yeast infection then you have had a fungal infection. I know some people have bought the over the counter medication for the yeast infection and used it on their toe fungus. I was told it worked as well on that fungus infection as on the vaginal infection. I guess fungus is fungus no matter where it grows, but it is a lot harder to kill on the toes because the nail protects it. Any antifungal substance has to get into the blood stream to kill the fungus. When you apply it on the toes, it has to get under the nail to get to the fungus and has to enter the blood stream to kill all of the fungus. In my mind I think of it as killing the roots on a tree. You have to do more than just cut the tree down, you have to get the roots. Fungus is hard to kill. You can't just kill the fungus that is visible. In time the growth will reoccur. If you can stop wearing closed toed shoes and socks after the fungal infection is gone, then the damp environment it needs to grow is not there and the fungus may stay dormant for years even if it is not completely killed.Good luck to all of you who are fighting this disfiguring growth and trying to get back into pretty sandals.

I had the fungus on my right thumbnail for over 15 years - tried the doctor & almost all the over the counters.
We were going on a cruise & went to the nearest nail salon to cover it up - my nails looked terrible! They used silk wrap & after 6 months it was gone, never to return! My hands are often in water and this helped them dry out!

I had a fungus develop under my big toes because of my combat boots! The lady that does my nails told me to keep them really short, scrape out from under them and soak in Listerine (yep, the mouthwash-brown kind) twice a day!! It took almost 6 months of diligence, but my toes are finally pretty again and I am going for my first pedicure!!! So, CUT THE NAIL BACK, SCRAPE OUT FROM UNDER IT, SOAK FOR 5 MINUTES!!!! Keep them short!! I got the fungus because of my nail bumping up against my boots, warm sweaty environment and too long in my boots!! Sure glad I am retired finally!!!

I read in AARP, this cure for toe nail fungus. After washing feet and drying them. Using a Q-tip, dipped in white vinegar onto each toe. After it dries, use another Q-tip dipped in Vicks vapor rub covering each nail. Do this every nite . It will take months for it to clear up completely. My nails aren't as thick as they were in the beginning. they are already looking much better after 6 months. Can't wait for it to clear up altogether.

If I can find the name of the solution my DH's doctor gave him, I will post it. Dh had bad problem with his nails and doctor said pharmacist could make up the solution. He had to apply once a night for several months, but it worked.

Be sure to wash your socks inside out and preferably line dry. Also, if you can, try not to wear the same pair of shoes continuously. Let your shoes air and dry thoroughly...bi-carbonate of soda is a handy drying/deoderising treatment for shoes.

Loved your last comment! LOL!
I would match DH's toenails against anyone's in an ugly toenail contest. Now mine are getting to look the same. The fungi must be migrating in bed at night.
The crappy thing about getting old - toenail fungus.
The good thing about getting old - very few people are checking to see how cute your toes are anymore.
