We set a live trap to see what was digging to get under our garage door..... happened a few years ago when we were trying to get a wood chuck out of our garden.... you kind of forget that certain undesirable critters are nocturnal and that you should trip the trap at night..... so now, again, we have a skunk.
We watched youtube videos of how to sneak up to let them free, but last time it wound up spraying anyway. We have about an acre of land - there wasn't one foot of it that didn't REEK of skunk. It was nauseating. So dh is extremely nervous right now.... he doesn't want to go through that again.... and we have to go somewhere in a couple of hours (he really doesn't want to smell like skunk). And of course the trap is kind of a pain to open, especially when you're trying to stay out of the way. Anybody want to volunteer? Dh would be so grateful! lol!

You have to sneak up on it with a blanket to throw over the cage so you don't get hit with spray. The idea is that the skunk doesn't get alarmed enough to even spray. Then you move the cage to where you will release it and open it up - from behind. Problem is, last time it freaked when it saw dh coming with the blanket and when ballistic with skunk-scent. Then poor dh struggled for I don't remember how long, trying to open the door with a pole.... they don't make those things easy.
For some reason no one seems to get sprayed when the videos are on youtube..... maybe I should take a video so people can see what REALLY happens! lol! Dh is avoiding it... we have a friend that works for the forest-service and we'll be seeing him tonight. I think dh is going to ask him what he suggests. Actually I'm afraid they'll just say to kill him - I've heard that if you call pest control or animal control, they are required to do away with skunks since so many have rabies (not all do however), so they take the trap and drop it in a bucket of water. I just can't handle that.

We have skunks in the neighborhood and if it weren't against the law in CA, I would have a descented skunk as a pet (for real) but it is against the law.
Our dogs are too stupid to stop attaching skunks, so we deal with the onslaught of the stench quite regularly. The one time when they actually KILLED one in the front yard, the smell was so bad, that it took over an hour to change to the "normal" skunk smell. OMG it was HORRIBLE. I did learn a lesson though: Wear gloves when bathing dogs - at 2 in the morning I was a little befuddled and washed their faces without gloves.

Oh, I know!!!! The up-close-and-personal skunk scent is far more noxious than what you smell on the road!! Our dog got hit once and you could hardly go near her without gagging!

Could you drop a rope around it, maybe with a hook on it, and drag the trap WAY WAY WAY away from your house? Real fast?
REAL fast, probably making him upset with the bouncing around.
And then drop a blanket over it from a tree maybe? Then at night go and open the door, run like mad and hope he will leave quietly.

If they get alarmed at all, they WILL spray - and since he's in the garage (our pole building garage), that's where dh keeps all his equipment for work. He's not excited about it getting scented!

I wonder if the Vet has some spray knock out meds that you could mist the garage with?
