If you get sprayed, this method works for removing the smell.

    1 box of baking soda
1 bottle of peroxide, small one not the huge one
    1 gallon of water
    1 squirt of dish soap

Mix and use with in 30 minutes. My dog got sprayed and it work wonders, better than tomato juice. Something with the baking soda and peroxide. It even work on the rags we used to clean the dogs.

You should call your local agricultural commission and ask for the trapper. All states have federal trappers and they will come and collect animals that are trapped and either turn them loose elsewhere or dispose of them if they are a menace to livestock, etc.

I remember my grandmother telling me a skunk walked in front of her one day. She reached sown and grabbed that skunk by the tail and threw that skunk in one direction and she took off in another. She did not get sprayed. They need to jump their fanny up and down to shoot the spray out, she did not give that skunk a chance.

Go buy several (6 or 8 or more) gallons of tomato juice. When you get sprayed (and you probably will - or your dog will), strip down outside, if possible, and wash all over with the tomato juice. That's the only thing that will do a fair job of removing skunk odor.

Best idea is to wear a bathing suit while you're trying to open the cage, that way you're already stripped down.

someone had set traps on my dad's property and a skunk got into the trap. (wasn't a cage). Dad called the gamewarden and he came out. the skunk was there for several days. The gamewarden threw the skunk some cheese crackers and while he was eating, he released the trap. No spray at all. Hope this helps!!!

Your gonna laugh, but we used fabreeze on our little poodle that chased a skunk on our first dog gone day of vacation. We had only been at our cabin 4 hours when it happened. So we had to drive back home and on the way we stopped off at our groomers house to ask her for ideas. We used her ideas, and it still did not work and the poor little dog kept sneezing as it was square in his face. So I looked at the bottle and it said safe for pets. It worked excellent. lol

Okiepastor, he did deserve that! I would've laughed too. lol! Hope it taught him something.

And thanks for that recipe Chuckbere15 - it's definitely one to keep on hand!!

Well, while I was at work, dh got him released - and NO spray! He was very careful to cover him and did it all very slowly. Now maybe this time we'll remember to trip the traps in the evening!!! I'm so relieved it's done - and dh doesn't stink! lol!

Years ago our dog trapped one under our house. You know that cartoon with pepi la pew & his sent shows waves in the air. That truly happens. The oil from it filtered in the house & we could actually see it in the air. It really burns the eyes too. Only one room in our house didn't reek for months. It was on & in everything. Took months before it faded away. We were known as the LOL skunk people. Everyone could smell it when they drove by our house. After that we put lots of moth balls under & around the house till we got it all sealed up. Never had a problem after that. I still put out moth balls in the spring around our property line & has kept them away. We live in a small farming community where everyone knows everyone.
