Go to your local County entomologist and have the caterpillar identified. If it is a harmful type, go to your local nursery and get some Bt, an organic means of controlling them. It won't harm anything else

We used to have them when we had lots and lots of trees
and other plants. A gang of ducks were let loose and they
ate most everything that moved. Unfortunately, then they
went on to the cash crops....they did make some real good
tasting baked dinners though.

I live in an apt. building so it won't do me any good to treat my little section.

Whatever they are, they are ugly. And all this bug talk makes me itch. I'm just glad I don't live close to you.

I didn't read all of the posts here so someone may have already said this, but they look like gypsy moth caterpillars. We had an infestation back when we lived in NJ and they defoliated the trees. We heard sounds like drops of rain and realized that the sound was that of their poop hitting the ground. THAT'S how many we had.

They were everywhere - car, house, ground, any surface imaginable. YUK!

Because of the weather being so strange everywhere, I think we'll witness a lot of weird things.
