I have a treadle for just such emergencies, have even been known to use a flash light for lighting too.

Living smack dab in the middle of hurricane-land, I can surely relate to being powerless. During Ike, my neighborhood was without electricity for a week. Fortunately, at the time I had just bought a house west of Houston, where they did have power, so I took a trundle bed out there to sleep. One of the criteria for the new house was that it had to have a gas stove... at least a gas cooktop. I can't tell you how many times I've stood out in the pouring rain and whipping wind, trying to heat up baby bottles and baby food on the gas grill in the back yard. That was ok when I was younger, but I no longer have any incentive to punish myself. <G>
