You let the child pick your name on their own. I raised my grandson from birth and because I was his mom as well My son kept calling me grandma and mom so when my grandson could speak sentences he started calling me ma-maw and it stuck so 3 granddaughters teenagers now And a great grandson and now a new granddaughter whom cant speak sentences yet well I am sure I will be ma-maw forever and its so wonderful. God bless my husband and I so very much with these grandchildren He is blessing you too.

We're another case of "too many grandparents". My kids are all step children, who never called me "mom", so I figured no one should ever call me "grandma!" And, my husband and I are both carpetbaggers living in NC, and neither of us ever heard of "maw-maw" and "paw-paw" until we moved here... and to be honest, we don't like those labels. ( I guess I wasn't too eager to be labeled as a grandmother in any way (sorry!), but I love all my grandkids!)

Anyway, my DH wanted to be called Pop, which is what he used to call his stepdad. And I decided "Cat" would work for me, since my name's Cathy. So, we are Pop and Cat. (His name's Doug, and I suggested Dog and Cat, but he didn't like that )

My first grandchild, a girl, called me Marmar. Don't know why, but it stuck for the other 4. She also called her blankie "liddle, liddle, liddle" She has grown into a beautiful, very intelligent young lady. But I do often remind her of the "liddle, liddle, liddle". Have to keep em humble.

I am called Grandma Raine since that is easier to say than Grandma Lorraine or some just call me Granny I really don't care what they call me as long as it is said with love. Sometimes it is just Grandma.

I am Nonna and my DH Nonno(Italian) to our two grandchildren, like others have mentioned, they have an extended family tree on their father's side and the grandma and grandpa names went to the older generation. We chose Nonna and Nonno because we love Italy and spend vacations there whenever possible. It is very cute to hear my DGD explain to her friends that "she's my grandmother but we call her Nonna..." The paternal grandparents are Memaw and Poppa...
