Today is my mother's 84th birthday and we were reminiscing about old expressions/phrases. She recalls that her mother would ofthen use the expression "This won't buy baby a shimmy" ... and so my question what is a shimmy? Has anyone ever heard of this old expression?

i think it would be a chemise, something to wear. baby would need that more than dance lessons.

I think the "shimmy" refers to a chemise. I've not heard of that phrase though.

This is what I think, too. I haven't heard that expression in a long time. :)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimmy

Given her age I believe this is correct.
