I consider us some of the lucky ones since we are at a pretty good spot and can help each other through tough times.
Unless she's really set on living in Oregon I wouldn't come here (at least without a job already lined up). Historically Oregon has deeper and longer recessions than the rest of the country. Our unemployment has been higher than the national average for more than 10 years! One of the more recent studies is that we are at 10.5% unemployment rate and the rest of the country averages 9.5%.
Don't get me wrong I love living here but economically Oregon is a tough state to live in.
Well that doesn't sound good! Her boyfriend got a promotion and is heading there in October so I don't think she will change her mind. At least at their age they can "live on love". Actually he has a contract for 2 years and they are accustomed to living on very little as students. They are resourceful and hopefully it will work out. Gotta stay positive.

Things are bad in Indiana. Hubby has been out of work since May. He went to a job fair at the union the other day. There were 22 available positions and they had 2300 people show up.

Here we have a lot of retirees who are living on their savings and social security in a farming/ranching community so the unemployment rate is lower. Around 8.5 percent. We also have a college and hospital which really helps with jobs, but if you are over 50 work is harder to find. Hubby and I are lucky as we have no debt and our children have jobs. I really feel for those who are out of work and in need of a job.

It is pretty ugly here as well. I survey my patients as to employment in their family. The federal numbers are at 10.5 but we are really at about 16-18% counting the full time people who are now PT, wage cuts and people who just arent on the rolls anymore.

Job situation here is dismal. Walmart is the largest employer in town but of course they only want part time and younger people. Someone on one of my other groups posted this. Very interesting. Have a look.

A very sad situation but we are a nation of strong people. I have faith that we will pull through and hopefully learn from past mistakes.

Here in the town that I live in there are MANY jobs that people just don't want. It is kinda sad, I see so many people (online) that WANT to work but can't find a job. Then I look around my own town and see in our local paper places pretty much BEGGING people to go to work for them. I know of at least three people that have been out of work for awhile but refuse to go back to work because they are still getting unemployment. Their mindset is why go back to work making X amount of money when I can sit at home and do nothing and make Z amount! Then when the unemployment runs out they are sitting around complaining that they can not get a job and they are broke. Sorry for ya should have taken that job offer three months ago making less month than you were making sitting on your ARSE doing nothing! For these people I feel no sympathy!
